The Sound of Silence

The past week I've been reflecting upon the sudden and tragic loss of my best friend, Maggie McHugh, who passed away two years ago today. For my new readers who might not know, Maggie & I wrote Recipe Records together nearly five years ago. The reminders of her are just about any place that my weary eyes rest. Last week I ran across a CD list that I had created for her, containing various songs she requested and Simon & Garfunkel's "Sound of Silence" was one of those queries. Today that song came on my "radio" (otherwise known as a phone) and I listened intently to the poetic lyrics, something I had not previously invited. Paul Simon wrote:  "Fools said I 'You do not know, silence like a cancer grows. Hear my words that I might teach you, take my arms that I might reach you.' But my words like silent raindrops fell and echoed in the walls of silence."

Mags was a gifted poet & I know that Simon & Garfunkel's music touched her. I wish I'd asked her what specifically attracted her to this beautiful creation, which reminds me of the 'sound of silence' which envelopes me in her absence.

I really miss her humming the 'Sanford & Son' theme song when we'd all barrel out of my car, empty soda cans & cupcake wrappers trailing.  And I miss her presenting me with the latest wrinkle creams on my birthday, and reminding me I was 6 months older than she. I miss her calls in the middle of the night or the numerous voicemails that would await me when I woke in the morning. I miss that sweet soul who wouldn't hesitate to drop everything to play Beatles Rock Band with the girls. I want her to tell me which member of The Doors she disliked...as I know it was one of them, I just can't remember which one. I want to hear about the song & story that Eddie Vedder eloquently shared when she saw him a month prior to her death. She was so moved by his words & she wanted to tell me when we had uninterrupted time & she promised it would be in another call, but we always ran out of time.....

Mags was always full of advice and I was always the one to keep my advice covered unless requested. But I feel compelled to share my advice ... don't waste time...don't let those conversations go unfinished. Enjoy every moment with your loved ones.
Rest In Peace My Beautiful Mags.

We leave so many things unsaid, don't we? And live to regret it later. I hope to heed your advice.

So sorry for your continuing sorrow. I'm thinking of you, my friend!
