You're Gonna Like These Cold Stares.....

I am pleased to introduce you to The Cold Stares, a rockin' band that will appear on my radio show later today.  The band originates from Kentucky and when you listen to their music you'll swear there are more than 2 dudes rockin' it.

http://www.blogtalkradio.com/recipe-records-cookbook/2013/01/24/youre-gonna-get-the-cold-stares
(remember...if you can't listen today at 1:00 pm cst, you can click on this link anytime to hear the archived episode)

The boys have accumulated a respectable resume in a very short time, namely, winning Nashville's Hard Rock Cafe Battle of the Bands in 2010; releasing a CD which received critical acclaim and record company interest, opening for popular bands such as Rocco Deluca, Big Head Todd & The Monsters, Bob Schneider, Roman Candle, Verve Pipe and more.  The boys have recorded what they consider their best work "Sleeping With Lions," due out in March. Their CD "A Cold Wet Night & A Howling Wind" reached the Top 5 on Amazon.

Check out their artistically groovy website:

Sometimes when you see a band playing you fail to realize what struggles lie beneath the blaring guitars, drums & speakers. Talented lead singer, songwriter & guitarist, Chris Tapp, was diagnosed last May with cancer; resulting in surgery and treatments which stalled the band's performances and projects. Chris recently received a clean bill of health and is now giving some cold stares.

Drummer Brian Mullins: "Our band started as an accident. We had done other projects together, but nothing stuck. We were writing some songs and jamming by ourselves when he (Chris) brought in "Jesus' Brother James," The song was so good, I thought it was a cover. I thought it was some song that I should know and didn't. The next week he brought in "John" off our new record. Same way- an instant classic, imo. Those songs propelled the early days. (2009)."

If you are in the Evansville area I HIGHLY ENCOURAGE you to check out this band Saturday night at Mojo's. I enjoy sharing cool info with my readers & this is a band you don't want to miss - they will be hot one day & you wanna be able to say "yeah, I saw those dudes."

Their album is available at Joe's Records, Itunes, Amazon, Rhapsody, Spotify, and at their shows.
It may also be ordered from their website
Same will be true for new album

UPCOMING GIGS:

John Lennon's Blurb for Today (Thanks to Jude!) :

Probably the single most quoted (yes over-quoted!) John Lennon tidbit of wisdom is: “Life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans.” We hear it, repeat it, and…ignore it. And we continue to live life on “fast forward” just like Adam Sandler in the movie, “Click.”

Today, for example…I recorded a radio show for “The John Lennon Hour” and wrote another one for approval by an upcoming guest. I did a load of clothes, moved all the furniture back into my family room after a mold removal upheaval, ran three-and-a-half miles, cooked dinner, answered a ton of emails, sent out a business proposal, booked a new speaking engagement, Skyped with my grandson, called to check on my parents, watched Part 2 of “George Harrison: Living in the Material World,” cleaned the kitchen, and made coffee for tomorrow morning.

I barely took time to pet my cat, see the world as I zipped by, or hold my husband’s hand. And each day, I assure myself that tomorrow I’ll slow down. Yes indeed, I’ll enjoy life tomorrow.

“Life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans,” John continues to tell me. And at 40, he was gone. I’m living on borrowed and abused time. How about you?

Freedom ... Are you Sirius?

What began as a crappy week (due to the collapse of our septic system,) resulted in a sweet savory delight to my soul.
Not only was the demise of our septic a problem, but my vehicle was behaving much like a Lucille Ball episode...where she plugs a hole in a boat only to find another one blows.

After purchasing a new car, I found that it also included a free trial of Sirius XM Satellite radio. As you might imagine, this scenario is similar to putting a drug addict into a home sculpted from hemp or cocaine (or in Southern Indiana, sudafed & battery acid.)

Commentary: I believe the radio industry is heading in a sad & dangerous direction which threatens the future of mom & pop stations (are there any left?); local news, weather, those exciting high school games & that occasional annoying jingle for the local pizza shack is still endearing & could potentially become extinct. The corporate radio gobble is quickly making it a challenge for stations to survive; but this activity is duplicated in almost every field of trade in our country.
I have to admit that I am a serious music addict, which has become, well...sirius.  I won't give up on local stations, however, it's difficult for them to see outside their "music box."

Sirius XM radio supplies a classic vinyl station, which transmits those foreign crackle sounds, an Elvis station, Bruce Springsteen station, terrific songs played which I haven't heard for years, or dare I say...ever.... The Ramones, Pearl Jam, Janis Joplin, Tom T. Hall and more.

For instance, I probably wouldn't normally have stumbled upon this song if it weren't for Sirius; the song is from Quentin Tarantino's latest movie "Django Unchained" (which I haven't seen)--and I think you'll enjoy it.  The song is titled "Freedom" and it's performed by soul artists Anthony Hamilton & Elayna Boynton & it raises some serious hairs on the back of your neck. I think it's a fitting song to remember Martin Luther King, Jr. on this day as well.

Enjoy "Freedom" by Anthony Hamilton & Elayna Boynton:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bdOTUocn5w

I read a quote by Mr. Hamilton's from ww.okplayer.com:
“Me, Elayna and Kelvin got to thinking about Django’s story — how sometimes we have to be willing to put it all on the line,” says Hamilton, just nominated for two Grammy Awards (best R&B album and R&B song) for work off his Back to Love album. “And Freedom was born from that place. A place deep inside all of us, that fights to free ourselves from the chains of the world.”

Siriusly, this new radio took my mind off the conversations about natural bio-waste, bacteria and micro-organisms...which are topics a girl should never have to hear about in her very own home.

I'm always slow on the latest & greatest technology. So if you have any hints that would enhance this listening experience -- please share!  For instance, is there a station for the Foo Fighters & Beatles only ?  Now THAT would be the bomb diggity.

Peace, Love & Rock & Roll,

Good Day Sunshine....

It is a good day because I am hosting Part 4 of Recipe Records Radio Show, which is a tribute to Sir Paul McCartney. I was very fortunate to see him in concert in St. Louis this past November and he exceeded every expectation I ever dreamed. It was one of those events where every song was better than the last and you couldn't have created a more perfect set list.

I had the pleasure of meeting a Beatles tribute band this past summer, The Beatle Brothers. They were outstanding...specializing in only early Beatle songs (their songs without piano.) One of the members, Del Herbert, has written & recorded a lot of fabulous material which I highly recommend to you. I felt that if he could write music (in the same manner as Paul) and perform Paul songs with The Beatle Brothers...then he would be smashing as a guest to discuss Macca.

Please listen live today at 2:00 p.m. cst - or tune in to the recorded show anytime in the future.  Either way....you'll enjoy hearing some great stories about Paul McCartney.

And enjoy this Blurb from John Lennon author, Jude Southerland Kessler:

Late in life, John Lennon candidly admitted to an interviewer:
"Paul and I know each other on a lot of different levels that very few people know about.”
And it’s true…the up and down, angry and fond, competitive and encouraging, shouting and laughing friendship of John and Paul was something more private than John’s relationship with almost anyone. It was their differences that made The Beatles great. It was the yen and yang, the push and pull, the opposite forces at work that propelled The Beatles to the "toppermost of the poppermost!" The group with two leaders was so much stronger than it could ever have been with only one at the helm!!!

This is an excerpt from Jude's radio show, The John Lennon Hour, which airs each Sunday night at 7 p.m. CT on http://www.beatlesarama. com. To see the page of special photos of John and Paul and to hear the songs they wrote about each other and the Beatles tunes the wrote as a team, go to http://www.johnlennonseries.com/radioshow13.html Some of the videos are truly lovely!

You Say You Wanna RESOLUTION......

If you are humming REVOLUTION.... then my mission has been accomplished.

Well... ya know..... it IS the time of year that we wanna save the world and ourselves.  Recycle, lose weight, shed the other baggage that we think is not good for us.  If you are working on some intentions, then I have some ideas for you via my friend and author, Jude Southerland Kessler.  Jude has kindly agreed to contribute to my blogs as a sort of John Lennon muse.  She has expertly researched the life of John Lennon for the last 28 years, resulting in three very savvy works which comprise the beginnings of The John Lennon Series ( http://www.johnlennonseries.com )
John had a very sharp sense of wit and humor; which I think was fed by his curious and genius mind. He had a way of communicating ideas & thoughts via poetry, lyrics and conversation, which created memorable prose that I personally am grateful for.

Jude will be contributing a "Blurb" (which is what I think John would label a Blog) and I know you'll enjoy her unique way of sharing tidbits that John shared.

Here is her John Blurb for the week:
At the beginning of yet another year, we're all making "fast and furious" resolutions. "I'll give up cigarettes!" "I'm gonna quit drinking!" "I think I'll give up caffeine...or chocolates (sugar-coated caffeine)." "I'm going to quit eating so much and lose those ten pounds!"
As well-intentioned as we are (and we are, we are!), perhaps we're "giving up" the wrong thing. We're treating the symptoms but not the disease.
John Lennon once said, "The basic thing nobody asks is why do people take drugs of any sort? Why do we have these accessories to normal living to live? I mean, is there something wrong with society that's making us so pressurized, that we cannot live without guarding ourselves against it?"

Perhaps it is STRESS that we need to address in the New Year.
I have an idea. Now, don't make a big deal of this, but sometime in the next few days, jot down on a scrap sheet of paper (only if you have time) the 10 things that are stressing you most. Then make a resolution to cure one, lessen two of them, and work toward toning down the other seven.
John would urge you not to make this into yet another stressor, but instead to find in this effort, a way to guard yourself against the abuse of society, job, and yes, even family.
Remember that we can love others only "as we love ourselves." If you have no time to love yourself, no time to BE yourself, and no minute even to breathe, you're going to turn to "something" for relief. Hence, the cigs, alcohol, caffeine, over-eating, over-sleeping, and whatnot.

Guard yourself in 2013. "LIKE" you.

Happy Birthday to the King...

Elvis Presley would have celebrated his 78th birthday today if he were still living. I thought it might be interesting to read a few "fun facts" about The King of Rock & Roll, found from random sites, and I did not verify the accuracy:

When Elvis received a guitar for his eleventh birthday, he was disappointed; he was hoping for a bike.
Elvis was reportedly regarded by fellow students as a “trashy kid who sang hillbilly music” when he took his guitar to school and sang during lunch.
In the eighth grade, Elvis received a “C” in music.
Elvis never learned to read music.
Elvis made only one appearance at the Grand Ole Opry, in October of 1954. They never invited him back.

Elvis won Grammy Awards for Gospel recordings.
Elvis was six feet tall.
The Cleveland Browns were Elvis’ favorite football team.
Elvis’ natural hair color was blonde (in his early years) and light/dirty brown; he dyed it black.
Elvis was awarded two medals while serving in the Army, one for expert marksmanship, the other for sharpshooting.
Elvis held a black belt in karate.

Nothing can really jazz up a song list like "Mystery Train" or "Alright Mama," eh? Those songs sound as fresh today as they did in the '50's. Enjoy this link which displays terrific photos of Elvis - I especially like the one with the little dog & the baseball mitt.
