The Beatles at Walnut Ridge

A tiny farm town in Arkansas was swept away with unbelievable excitement ...when The Beatles briefly landed at the city's airport. The story has it that during a weekend layover between Dallas & New York, John, Paul, George & Ringo stole away to a dude ranch in Southern Missouri for some much needed rest and relaxation. When this sleepy town of Walnut Ridge got wind of the Fab 4 potentially landing at the airport, the crowd gathered to steal a peak....or a touch....

Tomorrow, Carrie Mae Snapp will share her exciting tale of when she saw The Beatles (and gasp, even touched GEORGE!)  Her brother, Charles, will fill us in on the details of The Beatles At The Ridge, a festival which is taking place in Walnut Ridge this weekend (oh & it's FREE!)

The city reminds me of my own slumbering hometown which struggles to save its history, along with paying the bills. There is a rich history of rock & roll in this area of Arkansas and I applaud the citizens for "saving rock & roll" in Walnut Ridge. Check out the enchanting parks the city constructed as a tribute to the foundation of Rock and Roll along with The Beatles.

This weekend's festival will showcase three stages of music: The Beatles, early Rock 'n' Roll, Country and Bluegrass. Chicago's terrific tribute band, BritBeat will perform Saturday evening. Stan Perkins, the son of rock & roll legend Carl Perkins (who The Beatles ADORED,) will be performing as well as Sun Records legend Sonny Burgess and The Legendary Pacers, and JR Rogers & The All Stars.
Of course you do not want to miss our friend & world renowned author, Jude Southerland Kessler, who will present an engaging program titled "Lennon's Liverpool" on Friday evening. Oh, and I will be there chatting about my Beatles cookbook, too.

Tune into the radio show tomorrow to hear all about the festival from fest organizer Charles "Hammer Time" Snapp (gotta find out why they call him that) along with his sister, Carrie Mae Snapp.

I love bacon. Bacon is the great American ingredient and it's used to enhance every possible food

The Hits Kihn-tinue

It's so cliché to start with "I remember when I was in high school"...but I'm gonna do it anyway. During my high school days, The Greg Kihn Band was blasting on the Kansas City radio stations, along with The Police, J. Geils Band and Judas Priest.  Kihn's hits "Jeopardy" and "The Breakup Song" rocked lots of hip Missouri country teenagers & we proudly blasted the tunes in our cars.
Greg Kihn experienced success in his music career and with great ease he smoothly transitioned over to radio disc jockey in San Francisco, where he planted himself for nearly 17 terrific years. The musician proved that he could not only write hit songs, but he could write outstanding novels. His first novel, Horror Show, was nominated for the prestigious Bram Stoker Award for Best First Novel.

His latest "hit" Rubber Soul, is part murder mystery, part coming-of-age story, brilliantly inspired by interviews with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Patti Harrison, Yoko Ono and Pete Best. The characters are meticulously developed and tell the story of how four lads in Liverpool obtained vinyl records from the USA, which influenced their creativity & took their band to unimaginable heights. The story, bound with completely accurate historical details, is an engrossing tale conveying the Fab 4's road to stardom which also includes an unforgettable assassination plot in 1966 by Ferdinand Marcos in The Philippines.

Tuesday, September 3 is the release date for Rubber Soul  and I am incredibly honored to host Greg on my radio show, where he will talk about his new book & other projects. You are invited to tune in live (it's a 30 min. show) & I invite you to call the show to ask Greg a question or congratulate him on his latest hit.  The phone number is found on the radio show link.

If you can't listen live, you can listen to the archived episode, which posts immediately following the show. It is found at this link as well.
